Introducing EigenCloud, A Developer Platform to Unlock Crypto's App Era
EigenCloud brings verifiability-as a-service to every developer; a16z crypto has purchased $70M in EIGEN from the Eigen Foundation
Today, after nearly a year of research and development, Eigen Labs is excited to announce the launch of EigenCloud, a developer platform that extends the main benefits of the blockchain – trust and verifiability – to any application, on or offchain. Built atop EigenLayer and powered by the EIGEN token, the EigenCloud platform brings all of EigenLayer’s third-party Autonomous Verifiable Services (AVSs) and our first-party developer primitives, including EigenDA for data, along with two new primitives, EigenVerify for dispute resolution, and EigenCompute for execution, into a unified cloud platform.
EigenCloud gives developers building on any blockchain the tools to finally build verifiable and trustless Web2 applications and services. It transforms verifiability into a programmable, cloud service enabling developers to prove what happened, why it happened, and that it happened, across domains where trust and correctness matter most: LLMs, AI agents, prediction markets, medical records, traditional media, social media, and countless more.
Ethereum solved crypto’s scalability challenges years ago. Still, no blockchain or service has solved crypto’s lack of programmability, which has created a stagnant application ecosystem that fails to attract mass consumption – until now. EigenCloud gives developers powerful tools to build previously-impossible apps that can complete complex tasks off the blockchain – in Web2 – while still using the blockchain to handle payments and trust.
EigenCloud’s offchain compute services, backed by EigenLayer staking, offer L1-like cryptoeconomic verifiability for general-purpose computation and extend it beyond the objective disputes blockchains can handle to virtually any offchain computation or agreement.
a16z crypto, which previously led Eigen Labs’ $100 million Series B round, has purchased $70 million in EIGEN tokens from the Eigen Foundation to help support development of the verifiable economy. With this purchase, we are accelerating the commercialization of these new services, which, together with our rich AVS ecosystem, can unblock thousands of app developers across crypto’s smart contract ecosystems and open the design space of crypto to any web2 developer.
“EigenCloud will enable the next generation of disruptive, mass-market crypto apps, closing the gap between what developers want to build onchain and what blockchains allow them to build,” said Sreeram Kannan, CEO of Eigen Labs. “EigenCloud expands the programmability of crypto and makes virtually anything verifiable onchain. It opens up the opportunity for developers to build highly ambitious products like disintermediated digital marketplaces, onchain insurance, fully onchain games, automated adjudication, powerful prediction markets, and verifiable AI.”
We have designed these new services around the EIGEN token, which uniquely enables EigenCloud’s rich offchain programmability while maintaining complete verifiability. Applications built on the EigenCloud are secured by EIGEN stake and can generate fees that can be used to support staking rewards, fund product innovation, or power ecosystem incentives.
“We’re entering a new era where verifiability is becoming a foundational building block of the internet, and EigenCloud is a bold step in that direction. By bringing verifiability into the cloud-native developer experience, Sreeram and Eigen Labs have been best-in-class leaders in expanding what’s possible on Ethereum and advancing the infrastructure for more trustworthy digital systems. At Consensys, we believe Ethereum is the foundation for the next-generation internet—and for a new world economy—one that is decentralized, programmable, and built for global trust. Eigen Labs’ work helps bring that vision closer to reality,” said Joe Lubin, co-founder of Ethereum, CEO of Consensys, and Chairman of SharpLink.
This week, Eigen Labs is rolling out the alpha version of EigenCloud, featuring a massive performance upgrade for EigenDA and a gated preview of our EigenVerify service, which lets AVSs leverage the forkability of the EIGEN token to perform slashing and impose cryptoeconomic penalties on misbehaving nodes. The team also released an ambitious roadmap including new developer tooling, additional dispute modes for EigenVerify, and our new EigenCompute primitive that simplifies deployment of AVSs and automates the heavy lifting of managing underlying stake and node infrastructure. We will open developer access to these new primitives in waves over the coming months.
EIGEN Unlocks Crypto’s Infinite Endgame
Bitcoin disrupted money, and Ethereum made it programmable for the first app developers, but we believe crypto is just getting started, and the next era of application innovation will come when crypto’s verifiability is programmable for any developer building any application in any industry. This is the goal of EigenCloud. We are well on our way to unlocking this third era. Just a year after launching on mainnet, EigenLayer has become the fastest-growing developer ecosystem in crypto, with 200+ AVSs live or in development built by innovators across industries. These companies are leveraging more than $12 billion in staked assets to secure $2 billion in new application value. Collectively, these companies have raised over $500 million in funding to build the world's leading EVM rollups, powerful oracles, and offchain middleware, as well as pioneering new services that verify critical AI workflows like inference and model training. EigenCloud will accelerate these teams and empower developers from all ecosystems to join us in our pursuit of open innovation and infinite-sum games.
Verifiability has never been more urgent or more exciting. Making crypto verifiability programmable for any developer will help us hold AI to account, enable consumers and businesses to verify the outputs and execution of new agentic applications and usher in an era of fully trusted software.
"EigenLayer is surmounting the technical bottlenecks of blockchains to enable a new category of applications built on verifiable solutions," said Ali Yahya, General Partner at a16z crypto. "We are thrilled to expand our investment in the project."
Access to EigenCloud services is rolling out to select developers today, with expanded availability planned for later this year.
