EigenCloud Goes Multi-Chain on Base

Introducing Multi-Chain

To date, Eigen Builders have been limited in where they can deploy their AVSs. Consumers of AVS services, such as apps and dapps, could only integrate on Ethereum L1 with EigenLayer’s strong security guarantees. Some AVSs have attempted to build their own multi-chain solutions, but development, maintenance, and execution costs proved prohibitive, as all of the relevant verification data is stuck on the Ethereum L1. Today, Eigen Labs is pleased to announce its latest protocol feature, Multi-Chain Verification (ELIP-008), which helps solve these challenges.

Multi-Chain Verification, a new EigenLayer protocol feature, allows AVSs to be easily configured to run on L2s or other chains in addition to Ethereum L1. By configuring a handful of core contract parameters, AVSs can get up and running on L2s in hours. On these chains, AVSs can develop new services and serve more customers in faster, cheaper environments. AVSs can now meet application customers where they are, while maintaining EigenLayer’s trust and security properties. By opting in to Multi-Chain Verification, AVSs will be able to improve their end-user experience, lower their costs, and simplify their development experience.

Public Preview is Live Today

Today, Eigen Labs is announcing our first iteration of Multi-Chain in a Public Preview. In this Public Preview launch, EigenLayer Operator Sets and stake weights are available on Sepolia Testnet with Base today. We are launching first on Base Sepolia to allow our AVS users to begin leveraging our new L2 offering. Base represents one of the most active builder ecosystems, so AVSs can innovate with more builders and more users. We will add support for additional chains over time, targeting mainnet availability in Q3.

How this Preview will Work

To join in on this Preview, AVSs can opt in here. AVSs can then choose a verification path. The integration experience is consistent across all target chains, now and into the future, to remove duplicate work and simplify AVS go-to-market. Our goal is to make it easier than ever to launch verifiable services across web3.

During this Preview, stake data on testnet will be updated daily. This is done by the protocol itself; more customizability will be available to AVSs later on, with flexibility around gas cost and functionality. Certain updates like a slash or ejection of an Operator will trigger immediate updates across chains to ensure consumer safety.

How to Get Started?

Eigen Labs has designed the Multi-Chain feature to keep integrations simple, yet flexible. We opt for a standards-based approach to enable modular AVS architectures where possible. You can learn more about the verification interfaces in the ELIP and in our Documentation.  You can learn about the multi-chain stake weighting here, and how AVS builders can decorate and customize verification components to suit their use case.

General Availability and Mainnet are Coming Soon

This Public Preview is only the first step in a thoughtful roll out of the Multi-chain feature. We will be launching on mainnet, adding new chains, and becoming Generally Available over the coming months. We believe this feature will transform AVS developers’ ability to engage with their end users. We are excited to see the creativity that is unlocked when AVSs can integrate with new chains and new customers.

As with any Preview, we are keen to hear your direct feedback. Reply to the ELIP-008 Forum post with any questions or comments on Multi-Chain and how to get involved.
